COLLABORATIONS

Open collaboration is the result of two or more parties working towards creating a product where none of the stakeholders compromises their own identity. If anything, what each of parts does is somehow potentiated. And the end result can only be positive.
VAVA collaborates with like-minded artists and designers who share a similar vision and purpose. Together, we delve into unchartered territories in an effort to create unique and innovative products, first-of-its-kind in the market.

JUAN ATKINS – MUSICIAN

Juan Atkins (born in 1962) is an musician. He is widely credited as the originator of music. Detroit, once a symbol of industrial prosperity, dramatically collapsed and was forced to re-invent itself to ensure its survival. The techno movement emerged as a significant step in this process of rebirth, and was part of a movement towards the creation of a Techno City, the city of the future.

The collaboration with the musician Juan Atkins, founder of the genre Techno in Detroit in the early 80’s, borns to highlight the link with the cultured electronic music. 2015 was the thirtieth anniversary of Atkins record label, the Metroplex.

We’ve chosen Juan because he is a high profile artist and a forerunner of a genre that has deeply influenced the story of electronic music. His music is a form of experimentation that emphasizes the balance of man and machine, the same artistic basis at the core of VAVA philosophy.”

RAD HOURANI – DESIGNER

RAD HOURANI (born in 1982)is  a Canadian fashion designer, photographer, and artist known for his neutral, genderless creations. In January 2013, Rad Hourani became an invited member of the Chambre Syndicale de la  in Paris, marking him both the first Canadian to show during Couture Week, and the first designer to show a unisex collection at this event. And continues exhibiting his photographic work around the world, in particular a film projection at Centre Pompidou in Paris, an interactive installation at the Tate Modern in London, as well as different installations at the FIT Museum in New York, MU Art Center in the Netherlands and the Herning Museum of Contemporary Art in Denmark. His most recent multidisciplinary exhibitions were presented at Arsenal Contemporary Art Center in Montreal, the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum in New York and a film installation at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.

The collaboration with Rad Hourani, a pivotal name in Unisex Clothing, is the result of an indisputable bound between VAVA and a designer who has been pushing the boundaries of gender binary.

SIZA VIEIRA — ARCHITECT

ÀLVARO SIZA (born in 1933) is one of the world’s most decorated architects and a key figure in modern architecture, Álvaro Siza Vieira graduated from the School of Fine Arts in Porto in 1955.
Described as a “poetic modernist”, Siza Vieira was awarded the Pritzker Prize in 1992. In the jury’s own words “Like the early Modernists, his shapes, molded by light, have a deceptive simplicity about them; they are honest.” His plans for the headquarters of the Iberê Camargo Foundation in Porto Alegre, Brazil (completed in 2008) won him a Golden Lion in Venice in 2002. Siza Vieira was awarded the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement at the 13th International Architecture Exhibition in 2012.

VAVA is very much inspired by Architecture.
Framed as buildings, our eyewear uses the face as a landscape.

There is a strong interplay between the design elements involved in architecture and VAVA. Eyewear being a rigid object needs to fit a face perfectly, ultimately looking at becoming a mechanic part of the body.
Siza works have always been a great source of inspiration for VAVA.

This commitment would be upheld by the creation of a capsule collection of eyewear. For this occasion, the essential qualities of the models would be synchronised with the experimental ethos of Alvaro Siza.
